KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) — Malaysia’s total population in the third quarter was estimated at 34.1 million, growing 1.6 percent year on year, official data showed Wednesday.
The population growth rate declined as the number of births decreased in the same period, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement.
The total population comprised 90 percent of citizens and 10 percent of non-citizens. The male population increased to 17.9 million from 17.6 million a year earlier while females rose to 16.2 million from 16 million.
Malays accounted for 58.1 percent of the population in the third quarter, while the Chinese and Indian populations decreased to 22.4 percent and 6.5 percent, respectively as compared to 22.5 percent and 6.6 percent a year ago.
The number of live births for the quarter fell 12.3 percent year on year to 100,645.
Meanwhile, a total of 48,317 deaths were recorded in the third quarter, an increase of 1.9 percent year on year. ■
